Restoration: “Painting on Canvas – Salort Family Coat of Arms”

Before:

A re-lining was considered, but it was ultimately decided to apply linen fabric patches on the reverse for several reasons.
Given the large dimensions of the piece, the difficulty —and above all, the considerable cost— of such an operation, and taking into account that it is not a work of great artistic value, a minimal intervention approach was chosen.

The treatments carried out aimed to stabilize the canvas and improve the overall legibility of the work. Cleaning of the canvas on the reverse.

Removal of the layer of dust accumulated over the years.

Application of a linen band to reinforce the canvas along the damaged edges and allow it to be re-stretched onto the stretcher.

Cleaning of the paint layer, removing accumulated dust and insect droppings with a scalpel.

Application of a light coat of varnish to prepare the surface for subsequent filling.

Filling of the losses in the areas of missing paint layer. Application of a second coat of varnish, intended to seal the filled areas and prepare them for pictorial reintegration.

Pictorial reintegration with illusionistic retouching in all the filled areas. Final varnish with a satin finish, thereby protecting the paint layer and achieving a better aesthetic result.
