RESTORATION OF THE PAINTING OF THE “ANUNCIACIÓN”

Since the painting had been previously restored, the treatment consisted of minimal intervention, addressing only the visible damage. The most urgent need was to stabilize the paint layer in areas with delamination and losses. Acrylic resin (diluted to 25% in water) was applied with a brush to these areas to correct the problem.

To remedy the warping between the original canvas and the lining, acrylic resin (diluted to 20% in water) was injected onto the surface of the affected areas, as injection from the reverse was not effective. Using weights and applying pressure with a heated spatula, the two canvases were adhered, eliminating the delamination.
All losses within the paint layer were filled and retouched pictorially. The original layer has a reddish ground (typical of the 18th century), so the added gesso was tinted with a reddish hue using an aqueous technique. The painting was then retouched with pigment and varnish, and finally, a thin final layer of matte varnish powder was applied to precisely even out the surface gloss.

New mounting fixtures were installed on the back of the painting to allow the attachment of the outer frame to the auxiliary one. This improves the overall structure and prevents damage caused by the oxidation of the previously used nails.
